Adult Spelling Bee

Competitors must register, but unregistered spectators are welcome and encouraged.

The Garland County Library challenges the self-proclaimed wordsmiths of the community to participate in its second Adult Spelling Bee! This bold and novel event takes place at 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 26^th. Anyone age 18 or older is welcome to compete in this free, daring showdown to determine the greatest speller in Garland County. There will be special prizes for the top 3 finalists, but not even the most unlucky contestants will go home empty-handed. First place will also win a Samsung Galaxy Tab!

This Bee follows an unofficial, modified format, to be more casual/beginner friendly, adapted by library staff from the Scripps National Spelling Bee rules.  In a nutshell (or beehive, if you will), spellers will be eliminated after just a single incorrectly spelled word. Spellers will keep spelling until only one person successfully passes a round, and a champion can be declared.

Each speller will have a brief time limit to respond. Each speller may request that the judges repeat the word’s pronunciation, and/or give its definition, example in a sentence, or part of speech. Any misunderstanding of a word is the fault of the competitor. Word difficulty will range from everyday, but commonly misspelled words, to the most obscure depths of the dictionary.
