This program is sponsored by the Garland County Historical Society in collaboration with the Garland County Library.

Historians have struggled with how to contextualize Hot Springs within the narrative of “America’s Best Idea.” Often their approach has been to give Hot Springs a small acknowledgement for the 1832 legislation but otherwise leave Hot Springs out of the discussion of the creation of the National Park Service (NPS). In this program, HSNP Education Coordinator Dr. Cane West will discuss Hot Springs’ development as a federal park at the beginning of the 20th century and offer a way to understand Hot Springs’ influence on the creation of the NPS in 1916.
