Can a garden aid in healing the body?  Join Minnie Shelor, Garvan Woodland Gardens Garden Manager, who will present “Healing Gardens”, where she will discuss the theory of gardens as healing spaces and explain design principles in the creation of healing garden spaces.

In recent years, the medical community has begun to incorporate healing gardens into hospitals, health care facility designs, and recovery centers.  This presentation will discuss the theories supporting the idea of gardens as healing spaces and explain a set of design principles for application in the creation of healing garden spaces.  The theories to be discussed include the research of environmental psychologists, color therapy, aromatherapy, and the exploration of the environment through the senses.  This presentation will be an introduction to these theories.  The goal is to help to tie the psychological, physiological, and emotional responses of the individual to the environmental experience and create awareness of these elements in private home and garden settings.
