(VIRTUAL) Songs of Freedom (1900-today)

October 7 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm CDT

Program livestreamed at facebook.com/garlandcountylibrary and youtube.com/garlandcolibrary

This extremely relevant musical program traces music’s role in more than a century of union organizing, war protesting, civil rights demanding, and environment protecting and spans from Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie to the various parodies of today.

Presented by Craig Harris. Music historian, educator, storyteller, percussionist, and host of a Bluegrass Country radio show (Fridays, 10PM- 1AM), Craig Harris is the author of many books, including  Bluegrass, Newgrass, Old-time and Americana Music (2018), and the forthcoming Rise Up: Indigenous Music in the 21st Century. A guest percussionist for many musicians including Rick Danko (The Band), and Los Texmaniacs, he is a member of the Gaea Star Band (with whom he’s co-hosted the syndicated Gaea Crystal Radio Hour since 2014) and Two-Day Jeans. After teaching music in public/charter schools for more than a quarter of a century, Harris launched the Drum Away the Blues program in 2009. Since then, he’s presented multimedia programs on Indigenous music, America’s musical roots, Woodstock’s 50th anniversary, and rock and roll.
