Join fiction writer and GCL staff member Chanan Emmons for a monthly dive into fiction writing and the writing life. The Inkhearts meet on the second Tuesday evening of each month to discuss craft-related topics and workshop fiction selections submitted by members of the group. No prior experience is necessary. New participants will be guided in the workshop process.

This program is free and open to all fiction-writing adults, from beginners to published authors, who want to sharpen their fiction writing skills and participate in a nurturing artistic community.

Chanan earned her MFA in Writing for Children & Young Adults from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and her BA in Professional & Technical Writing from UALR. She is excited to have the opportunity to work with other Garland County writers.

Bingo for Books

What: Bingo for Books
When: 1st Wednesday & 3rd Monday of every month (rescheduled for holidays)
Where: Library Auditorium
Who: Ages 18+
No registration required

The library hosts its long-running, popular Bingo program in the auditorium every month on the 1st Wednesday at 1 P.M.  & 3rd Monday at 1 P.M. (Falls on the 4th Monday when the 3rd Monday is a holiday).

Prizes include various gift cards to restaurants and grocery stores, as well as some gift certificates to the library’s Book Sale Room. All prizes for this program are sponsored by the Friends of the Garland County Library.

As part of the library’s commitment to accessibility, we also have braille bingo cards available to blind and visually-impaired players. Patrons with hearing loss are also supported with numbers appearing on screen.

No registration is required.

Garland County Candidates Forum

The Garland County Library will host a state and local candidate forum on Tuesday, February 6th. Doors open to the public for meet and greet at 5:30pm, with the forum beginning at 6pm.

All state and local candidates who will be on a Garland County ballot will invited to participate. Candidates will each get 5 minutes of time to give a speech and answer audience questions as they see fit.

Guest moderators will be Sarah Richardson, Executive Director of the Literacy Council of the Ouachitas, and Marsallis Weatherspoon, life member of the Hot Springs N.A.A.C.P. #6013.

Admission is free and open to the public, though seating is limited. This event will also be livestreamed to the Garland County Library’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

The Hot Springs Farmers and Artisans Market is a gathering place for locals and tourists to visit, sip coffee, and savor live local music on Saturday mornings. Shoppers can purchase their weekly produce, meats, eggs and fresh baked goods. Master Gardener and repeat KITGI presenter Jamie Wilkerson will teach the basics of canning. This overview will include 3 different canners as well as what can and cannot be canned in them. Other key topics will be the effects on canning of altitude and pressure, and the simple tools needed to can at home. Jamie will also demonstrate a quick refrigerator pickle recipe everyone can do at home.

John Dechant, author of Little Poison: Paul Runyan, Sam Snead, and a Long-Shot Upset at the 1938 PGA Championship, revisits the life and golf career of two-time PGA Champion Paul Runyan, a native of Hot Springs.
